Junk in my trunk

Did I mention how fat I’m getting? Aside from the over-feeding at Grandma’s house and the impulse to try every kind of street food I pass by those long tro-tro rides need fuel – my fuel is biscuits…

There isn’t much chocolate in Ghana. I assumed that was because of the heat and refrigeration issues. I was naively surprised to learn that Ghana doesn’t get to experience much of it’s own cocoa based produce. The export duty on refined goods here is so high that unrefined cocoa is shipped to the rest of the world to make chocolate and other cocoa based products that is then exported back to Ghana. Many of the cocoa farmers wouldn’t even be able to afford a chocolate bar made with their cocoa. I was lucky enough to spot a hawker at traffic lights selling Ghanaian chocolate bars Golden Tree’s ‘Kingsbite’ and grabbed a bar. It was heavenly – almost pure cocoa, no additives and so was quite rich. I scoffed it down in one go before it could melt.

There’s plenty of malt biscuits to go around though…
